Han efterlevde sin fars martyrskap, Zayn al-’Abidin, med 19 år och 10 månader. Under denna period gav han all sin tid åt att sprida den rena islam och att bilda framtida ledare, samt att lära folket var det rättmätiga ledarskapet ligger och vem som är förtryckare. Slutligen blev han martyr på denna väg den 7 Dhil Hijja, år 114 AḤ (736) och blev 57 år gammal. Hisham mördade honom genom att förgifta honom. Han ligger begravd på begravningsplatsen Baqi’ i Medina.
Barn
Han hade sju barn; Jafar Sadiq och Abdullah, som var barn till Umm Farwa, Qasims dotter. Qasim var son till Muhammed ibn Abu Bakr. Ibrahim och Ubaydullah var söner till Umm Hakim. Dessa två söner dog under Imam Baqirs tid. Ali, Zaynab och Umm Salama var barn till Umm Walad.
